THE ULTIMATE DRY CREEK LANDSCAPE

With thoughts of dry creeks and xeriscape gardening on my mind, let me take you on a trip to the real desert. In January, two years ago, on our way back from California we stopped in at a campsite in Palm Springs for two days. Trust me to hunt out some gardens for us to visit.

This one, at the Palm Desert Visitor Center is one of the most gorgeous desert landscapes I have ever seen. The gardens are a memorial to the landscape design work of Eric Johnson (1913-1999) Recognized as one of the foremost landscape designers in the southwest, he was a pioneer in developing and creating visibly lush and colorful landscapes using drought tolerant plants. Please enjoy this beautiful January day in the desert.

  2. This is beautiful....so more than just the rocks and sand one thinks of when you hear the word desert.

  3. This area has some of the best desert plantings. Most of the resorts keep the plantings appropriate for the desert.
Mr. P. plays in a golf tournament there every year...mostly Indian Wells, and mostly this time of year. I've gone many times, and have spent my time enjoying the gardens, if not the temperature.
We can learn a lot from them. Especially, after this summer.
    Beautiful photos.
    Stay safe...

  6. That is a beautiful desert landscape -- spare, just softened by the grasses -- and especially beautiful with the mountains looming in the background.

  7. I'll have to look up more of this designer's work. Love that last photo with the backdrop of angles and curves of the building.
