SOMETIMES I AM DRIVEN TO DESPERATION

The weather;  heat, lack of rain, caterpillars eating everything are driving me to think about giving up gardening! And then this.

I had seen this poppy shoot up between the salvias. It opened this week to a beautiful purple. The good thing is that all the pinks are gone so if I save the seeds they should be purple. I think I will have a change next year.
It really doesn't take much. However, I am thinking about changing the planting. This is madness trying to keep anything watered with drip irrigation.

  1. Now that gorgeous Poppy bloom would put a smile on any heart-broken gardener's dial!!! What a beauty. I can empathise completely with your heartaches when trying to keep a garden going through droughts or dry seasons, and through punishing heat and scorching sunshine. Re-thinking what we plant in order to suit the harsher conditions experienced at times, seems to be a common theme amongst gardeners these days.

  3. Beautiful bloom. I think all gardeners have those "moments"--but I sure hope yours passes. I'd hate to miss out on seeing your lovely garden!

  4. Jenny, I could never do drip. I have too much and I move everything out every year. I think of my time dragging the hose as therapy. I notice things I might have missed and can give extra to some, less to others. Your garden is so beautiful, would love to visit in person some day. Lets chat soon.

  5. Yep, there is always something that makes it all worthwhile just when you think you're going to give up. I've never had one poppy in my garden and if I did, I'd want that one. Do you recall where you got the seeds?

  6. Ah-h...that is gorgeous! I know it is hard during drought. You experience worse droughts than we do, and I am always amazed at the beauty in your garden.

  7. There will always be those times that try the gardener's soul, as they say, but you're right, that makes it all suddenly worth it...even if only briefly :-)

  8. I've been using the drip irrigation spray sprinklers. Not as water wise as drip, but better than regular sprinklers.

  10. Jenny, that's easily the most beautiful poppy I've ever seen. I've never seen one that color. Not to imply that I'm an expert on poppies, but do you suppose you have a true rarity there?

  11. That is quite a stunning poppy. Hope you have even more, next year.
It has been frustrating, fighting the caterpillars. Even the Viginia Creeper here is being stripped clean. A black caterpillar I can't identify. I don't think anywhere I've gardened, I've seen something bother this plant.
Then, the heat and no rain....sometimes I wonder why we do this. Then, something pops up and reminds us.
    Have a great weekend....

  12. That's a nice poppy!

Also, i know what you mean in regards to keeping things watered. I hadn't been watering at all and then it was like all of the sudden last weekend, everything went ::BAM:: "WE NEED WATER." I guess apparently the plants don't like going 5 weeks without any water... Which reminds me, I should probably tell the neighbor to water their new tree, lest this one die off like the last...

  13. Those are gorgeous! God sure did a great job when he made wildflowers. I know the flowers appreciate your tending, but isn't it neat to realize that they would still be beautiful and tough without our help. It reminds me of the verse in Matthew, the flowers of the field are clothed in splendor and yet they do not labor or spin their garments. How much more so does God take care of us.
