GARDEN BLOGGERS' BLOOM DAY SEPTEMBER 2012

It's a soggy bloom day in Central Texas and we are happy. Finally after all these months with no rain we had about 3" Keep on coming.

Do you see the pollen laden bee on the Texas sunflower? I wonder if he became too heavy to fly with all the moisture in the air. I hope he is just sleeping for now. I know I said no Texas sunflowers in that bed this year but once again they tricked me. Now they know it is too difficult for me to pull them out when bees and goldfinches just adore them.

Spider lily, Lycoris radiata.

Fall obedient plant.

Blackfoot daisy with decollate snail.

Crab spider on Felicia rose

The wonderful gomphrena, fireworks with pink crystals grass (above) and the regular button gomphrena.

Not the most spectacular bloom day but then the garden is so happy for the rain. Happy Bloom day to our hostess Carol at Maydreams and to gardeners everywhere.

  1. And others nearby have been soggy, but not you until now...a great feeling, even if wet on the rocks doesn't last. Nor does rot!

I hope to soon follow suit of getting some rain missed all year, and to see our wild Blackfoot Daisy plants bush out...yet the wild ones are actually still flowering. But with 3" of rain (or even 1"), it will be impressive. Your ruby crystals grass seed are still waiting for rain, defying my regular soaking of their area...soon!

  3. I just love that Gomphrena. It has a spectacular looking flower. Love the Daisies too. Thank goodness you've finally had some rain. Fingers crossed it keeps on falling.

  4. Hi Jenny! I planted some gomphrena and it did not ever really perform at all for me, maybe one or two blooms per plant. Any advice? It was in a very sunny bed, and I transplanted it from 1 inch pots in May, I think it was.

  6. Every time I see the fireworks gomphrena in your garden shots, I start to think about where I can plant some in my yard! And great close-up on the obedient plant; such a low-needs survivor, but the clusters of orchid-like blooms are so beautiful this time of year.

  7. I love your "sparkler" of Yucca rostrata foliage as a backdrop to your 'Fireworks' gomphrena blossoms. Perfect!

  8. That gomphrena sure loves the blues of the grass and yucca. Love seeing the spider lilies too this Bloom Day.

  9. Beautiful blooms! That last shot has me thinking that I want to do the same. So glad you are getting the rains. Is Lake Travis full yet or will it take a wet winter to get back to normal?
    Happy GBBD!

  10. Glad you got some rain finally! I love your gomphrena. I planted spider lilies this past year, but they never came up (I suspect my serial killer voles).

  12. Hooray for the rain! I'm so sorry you all have had such a dry summer. Still, your blooms are lovely. Our poor SC gardens look terribly tired right now--and this is the first year in ages that we haven't had a drought. Strange. I'm currently having spider lily envy--why have I never planted it in my garden? Yours is gorgeous! Happy bloom day, and enjoy the rain!
