IT'S TURNING INTO A SQUASHINGLY GOOD YEAR

My success with zucchini, this year, is one for the record books. I finally have succeeded in thwarting the squash vine borer. At least for this year. It has resulted in an outstanding crop of zucchini.

I had to go looking for some new recipes. Zucchini patties have become one of our favorites.

Grated zucchini, parmesan, mozzarella, chopped onion, cilantro, flour and egg combine to make a delicious little savory patty.

This is a new one for me. Acorn squash 'carnival' should take on some pretty fall colors when it ripens. Let's hope the squash vine borer doesn't find it.

Butternut squash should be protected because its stems are solid. Let them try!

Cantaloupes are on the move. In fact they are making a take-over bid on the pathways. That's OK. They should keep the weeds at bay.

  2. My fav zucchini recipe is drizzle sliced rounds in a little oil, then dredge in half parmesan, half breadcrumbs with your choice of seasonings/herbs. Bake at 400 degrees for 25 minutes.

  4. Me oh my. Let anybody say you've only got a flower garden after seeing this. Those patties are sure inviting -even folks who think they don't like zukes would like those. Fingers crossed to see photos of the acorn in full Fall glory eventually. Any ideas why the borers have moved on this year? Weather not to their liking? You managed some intervention successfully?

Gosh - all of your plants seem to want to take over your paths. You have got some of the most exuberant growers at your place. You are clearly doing lots of things right. I'd have such garden envy only it is clear you've worked long and hard to reap these rewards. Enjoy!

  5. I made the mistake of looking at your post today while I was really hungry. I was tempted to drive all the way in from Hunt just to see if you had any leftover zucchini patties! ;-)
Everything in your potager looks like it belongs in a magazine. Just beautifully scrumptious!

  7. Did you do something different to prevent vine borers, or were you just lucky this year? (or maybe it was just a bad year for the borers?)

    1. I have been working at this for several years. I have cages over the plants and to begin with I got down on hands an knees and picked off any eggs. If the borer got in I made sure the lava didn't spend the winter in the soil. It seems to have paid off, at least for this year. I'm sure it will be back but for now it has been great.

    2. How did you ensure the larva didn't overwinter in the soil? Details please -- I've seen a borer flying around recently.

    3. By preventing the larva from maturing and going down into the soil. I disposed of the plants in the trash. Maybe I have just been lucky. No one has vegetable gardens around here!
