EAT THE GREEN FROG FIRST

Long ago I remember my husband coming home from a management course and telling me about eating 'the green frog first'. The idea is that if you have a distasteful task you will feel a whole lot better if you get that task done first.  Don't put it off because by the end of the day it will have turned into a monster toad.

I have eaten more than my fair share of green frogs this week and I know there are a whole lot more in my future. Fortunately David is good at eating green frogs too.

  1. I'll have to remember that phrase. But I'm curious: if you eat the green frog first, what's the reward - a brown toad? Something tastier, I hope! Your pot frog is certainly too cute to eat.

  2. This one's pretty cute, Jenny - I don't think you should eat him. I hope your post-hail recovery is coming along.

  5. When life gives you green frogs to eat, then put fried frog's legs on the menu... (With lemonade?) OK, sorry, I just took that metaphor and beat it to death, but...

Not only are you facing down the unpleasantness left from that last storm but you are doing so with a sense of humor that reflects your appreciation for the central truths. You have a beautiful home, your garden will recover and most of all - you have the ever sagacious David as partner through it all. Well done, ma'am and sir, well done!

  7. Now, I understand the green frog reference on Pam's blog. I'm so sorry you're having to do this. BTW, my last comment came through as Diva. Megan had a blog a long time ago on that email address (mine), and Google just won't let it go. It's still me.~~Dee

  8. OK, I had to do a little more research about this frog business online, and now I understand! It's not about "green" frogs, per se, as about the difficulty of eating a frog at all. It appears to come from the book Eat That Frog!: 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time, but the concept surely traces back to a quote by Mark Twain: “Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.” At any rate, thanks for introducing me to the concept, Jenny. Perhaps it'll help me be less of a procrastinator myself.

    1. Wondering where it had come from myself I had fund that it was attributed to Mark Twain. However, on digging deeper I found this was not the case and it came from a Frenchman called Nicholas Chamfort. There is no proof that Mark Twain ever said these words and therefore I decided not to mention his name.

    2. I guess everything pithy gets attributed to old Mark in due time.

  9. Whew! I was having trouble understanding why you'd "come in" from eating a frog but was so distracted by the idea of you eating Leopard frogs, I couldn't be rational. I do love the little guys. Anyway, it's a memorable saying perfect for use by gardeners. Great to hear your humor coming back - I hated that the hail had temporarily damaged that.

  10. Yes, I have heard of this quote. When you get up in the morning, eat the frog. That way you get something bad over with first. Sometimes that's really hard though. Guess I just hate the taste of frog. I did eat frog legs once. Tastes like fishy chicken.....ugh. But anyway, sometimes you just have to eat the frog.
