The carol seems quite fitting as my little Christmas tree is a German goose feather tree. Standing only 18" tall it was given to me for my first Christmas. You can imagine that it has great sentimental value and was one of the things I brought back from England 3 years ago after my mother passed away.

Bring your garden into the house to celebrate the festive season. Make it an all natural Christmas celebration. Go out into the garden and pick holly or other evergreens, tie together and fasten on a raffia bow. What could be more simple.

I love my newly named vegetable garden and the herbs that are growing so well now that cooler temperature are here. I suppose now that I have given the garden a little French flair I should call them 'erbs, but the fact is herbs they are and herbs they will always be. Sorry Julia!

It came with a howling cold wind. As the wind blew it froze the water on the bird bath into a raised solid lump of ice on the right hand side.

I have four lemon trees, all in pots. They are improved Meyer lemons and I can tell you that you will never want to buy a grocery store lemon ever again once you have tasted the Meyer. Thin skinned and wonderfully fragrant, no bitterness.

I'm going to call it the potager.


Surely this French word for kitchen garden has to have been derived from potage, meaning soup. Lots of things for the pot in my garden and also quite a potage of other things too.

 I also picked the first new parsley, chives and cilantro. Had to rustle together a quick meal after our drive back from Dallas.  A ham, cheese and herb omelet to go with the garlic, sauteed pak choi.

Just look at this lot. There are blackfoot daisies, dahlberg daisies, blanket flowers and purple skullcaps. In the sunken garden the recent rain brought forth a 'spectacle' of seedlings. That's my new collective noun for describing what would happen if I allowed all these to flower. He likes a varied diet.


Having eaten all the American Beautyberry berries he now has lantana as an appetizer, pokeweed as a main course with a side of chile pequin and pyracantha for dessert.


I'm certainly glad he hasn't stumbled on the pomegranates. They have all taken on this ruby red appearance, standing out like beacons. The mockingbird was just going crazy with this mirror yesterday. For an more than an hour he had an altercation with himself in the front garden. In the end I had to cover over the mirror with plastic bags. He was so bent on this other mockingbird in his territory that he let me get within 3 feet of him to capture his antics. The first and smaller one, I completed and wrote about last fall. I cut and filled the A frame with the cardboard tubes from trouser coat hangers ( the easy bit). They worked well and the apartments were quickly filled.

When we first began work on the garden we had to do a few small retaining walls. It was our first dabble into the land of  masonry block, mortar and stucco. We bought a cement mixer. Then the real projects began.

There is not a gardener in central Texas who is not celebrating the arrival of the first rainfall in months. 2" fell in my garden in the last 24 hours. My plants are happy, the soil is happy I am ecstatic. Never mind that we had to cancel our Sunday walk around Lady Bird Lake.

A flower forming on my soft leaf yucca, Yucca recurvifolia.


I'll swear that flower stalk was not there yesterday. Surely I would have noticed it.


But then again, just like the flower stalk on the agave this flower grows at an enormous rate. The good news is that the plant will not die.

Then the other day two males visited the water butt for a drink.

It was a rescue plant from a Lowes store in Florida some years ago. They were just selling off all their succulents and I happened to be there. I think this is the only one that has survived. These fruits are sitting right on the wall, which makes for a great platform for working away at the tough leathery skin on the pomegranate fruit.
