FIRST SIGNS OF SPRING

After days of rain and cold, today the sun finally broke through the clouds. I spent the morning outside cutting back and yanking out. Then, I spotted this bright little crocus blooming in the sunken garden.
Crocus 'snow bunting' was one a selection of white bulbs I received from the International Flower Bulb Center, my prize for the Abundant harvest photo I entered in the Gardening Gone Wild competition, Picture this Photo. Be sure to check out the subject for this month's competition.
I always had crocus in the garden when I lived in the north but I wasn't sure how crocus would perform in my central Texas garden. The unusually cold winter may be just what they were looking for. It was a bright spot in a morning of grunt work.

  1. Beautiful! I love the shallow depth of field, and I especially love the bluebonnet florets in the background, as though they were part of the crocus.

  3. How pretty! I didn't know you could grow crocus in Texas, but you are right, it must have been your colder than normal winter.

  4. What a nice treat.
My daffodils, planted the end of 2008, are up. I thought they'd be gone, from the drought. There are no buds, though. Maybe I should have fed them. I'll do better this year.

Thanks for sharing your treat with us.

  5. Your crocus is a foreign creature to this Texan. It's simply LOVELY! I'm headed out to weed the veggie gardens now...

  7. What a wonderful little spring surprise for you. And I see the bluebonnet that will come soon after the crocus is gone! Love those bulbs.
