GARDENERS' KNEE

The last thing a gardener needs is an injury that keeps him out of the garden. Last week working among the rocks I stretched for another rock and must have landed badly on my left leg. It didn't hurt at the time but sometime later there was a tightness in my knee and I could see there was obvious fluid build up. Darn it. I had too much to do than to be sitting with my leg up with an ice pack. A week later it is no better so today I am forced to rest it. Not all bad this morning.

Instead of the buzz from the bees in the garden I am listening to the buzz of those confounded trumpets from the crowd at the World Cup soccer match in South Africa. And it just happens to be England versus Germany. Now, I'm not much of a soccer fan even though I watched a zillion soccer games as we put three boys through years if Canadian and AYSO soccer. I can't help but feel a bit of emotion for this game. After all I have profound memories of the WC final in 1966 which pitted England against Germany. I had just graduated and was starting my first job in London. I arrived that morning by train and was watching the game in the living room of the family I was going to board with. When it got to penalty kicks I couldn't stand the pressure any more. To this day I hate watching those final penalty kicks.
Oh no! Germany just scored. Maybe I won't have to watch penalty kicks after all!
I may just have to switch to Find My Past to take advantage of the free viewing they're offering on the day that England plays in the World Cup. This may be the last.

  1. Oh, dear. Not fun to have a sore knee. Take good care of it.

Germany seems to be up quite a bit. But, it's not over, 'til it's over.

  3. Sorry to hear about your knee, I hope the rest helps. I haven't been watching the soccer much, except for when I go to the break room at work for a cup of coffee and it's on there. Those horns are a bit much!

  4. Truly sorry to hear about your knee. I know the whole time you are sitting there thinking of all the things that you MUST get done. The sooner you heal, the sooner you can get out there and tend to things, but in the meantime your garden will change so much that you will see things you might have missed before. Question, could you look at my blog, I just posted about a plant that I think is a beet. Could you look at it and tell me what you think (that is when you are able to). Thanks.

  6. Hi RR.

Oh No! Sorry to hear about your leg. Keep that ice compress on it. What about England...devastating! And how about that disallowed goal? still, I do not think it would have really mattered. The horns are annoying but I think I have mentally tuned them out at this point. Did you catch Jonathan Ross taking a circular saw to one of the horns on his show?

Leah and I really had fun at your place, it would take a while to really see all of your plants, but I left struck with all the different "views" you have incorporated into your garden. You both rock! (Yes, that was really bad, I know!)
A truly inspired indoor and outdoor space. And I loved that you instigated it all yourselves...from a clean slate to what you now have? Amazing!

    ESP.

  7. Thanks for all the good wishes on the knee front.
Ruth,- It was a shocker, especially with the disallowed goal.
Patchwork- I'm still resting the knee and you are right, Germany was up quite a bit more than anyone expected.
Julie, Jayne- I got quite used to hearing those horns as that telly was on all week. I could even hear the buzz outside!
Cynthia- Sometimes it is good to leave the garden for a bit, as you say. It will turn into a jungle though.
Pam- Everyone agrees on the horn front. I do think it attenuated as the weeks went on. Doubt I'll be watching any more.
ESP- No, never watch Jonathan- I can't stand listening to that speech impediment that he shares with a lot of Brits from the south! Glad you both could make it over here. Late June is not the best for my garden but it is still looking quite colorful.

  8. I hope you feel better soon. I really enjoy following your blog and seeing your photos. I garden in San Antonio and there aren't many garden bloggers here (at least not that I've been able to find). I always pick up great idea from the Austin bloggers and since our growing conditions are so similar, I feel confident giving them a try in my yard. Cheers!

  9. I have sympathy pains in my back. Consider it a great excuse to stay in the A/C and out of the heat. Your lovely garden will be fine! Oh -- when I had fluid on my knee a few years back, the sports therapy doctor made me drink tons of water (100 oz. a day) to keep the circulation system functioning properly -- very important when you have swelling around a joint. Feel better soon!

  10. I hope your knee is healing. It's hard to be hurt during the garden season, isn't it?

I am needing to take it easy a bit, too, because I have an infection in a scrape in my leg. My husband bought a used motorcycle. Thursday, when they brought it over, they brought their little dog. That dog went into my vegetable garden, which my dog is not allowed to do. I went after it, telling it it can't be in there, and scraped my leg on an old farm dealy we kind of use to close off the entry. I don't know what it's called. It's kind of like a half cage or something.

I've been on an antibiotic since Monday, but it doesn't seem to be getting better. You don't realize all the things that come into contact with your legs when you garden.

    Well, take care!

  11. Sorry about the leg. If you can find comfrey oil at a health store, you might rub some on it. It is a miracle for joints. It is an old cowboy remedy for joint problems for horses but it also works for people. I wouldn't be with out it here. I've just about figured out how I want the latch for your door to look. I will build it shortly.
