SKY BLUE FLAX

The other morning I was out in the sunken garden when I spotted flax, Linum lewisii, in bloom. The pretty sky blue flowers were peaking out from underneath my 'prize' Scutellaria wrightii.

Not the perfect place for the plant to seed itself as the skull cap has increased it's diameter by at least another 12" this year. I am glad to see lots of small flax seedlings in other parts of the sunken garden. It really is one of my favorite flowers.

  1. What a beautiful color for the garden. There aren't many plants with that lovely light blue around here. Maybe Plumbago...I can imagine how pretty that flax is in the color palatte.

  3. Cool - I had no idea that was native there. It stops flowering here by Memorial Day, but more common N and E of Abq. And that it reseeds into cracks and gaps there is great. My favorite "blue" in a flower, right w/ MX Blue Sage.

  5. Diana-You are right about the blue flowers. Last year I had the most incredible flowering of flax, but then last year was a special year for wild flowers.
Linda-I'm sure you have a dry sunny spot for this little flower.
Desert dweller-I'm not sure this one is native to this part of Texas. I have seen the orange one. I bought the original seeds and they just reseed.
Kacky- I have always really liked the smaller less showy flowers, but this one can put on quite a show under the right conditions.

  6. This is a plant I need to add to my garden for blue blooms in summer. Very nice!

  7. Definetly one of my favorites also. Mine are loaded with seed heads, which are quite attractive also.

  8. This photo has great potential. I think if you cropped it in on the flower with a bit of the lovely background it'll be much better than it is right now.
