THE INDESTRUCTIBLE

Yes, the indestructible Huernia schneideriane, red dragon flower. Left all summer in the shade on the front gate. Never a drop of water. Shriveled and forlorn two weeks ago. Miracle comeback after drinking its fill of water. This is one of the easiest plants a gardener could have. Very easy to propagate. (No-one should ever have to buy this plant.) Beautiful draping habit, perfect for a hanging basket or one of those head pots for the medusa look. I'm still looking for one.

Once again starting to produce flowers.

The Texas fishhook cactus is going to bloom too. It has 5 fat buds.

  1. Thank goodness for cactus. They really are tough plants.
    That's a great wall pocket.

  5. The hue of the cactus' green ad the wall's orange go together really well. Those little flowers are very interesting too.

  6. My huernia are the only thing left that the critters haven't eaten.
    Too prickly perhaps?
All my sedum varietes, gone! I guess they were just too juicy to resist.

  8. Oh, oh, oh! I'm so glad you posted the name of this! I have it, too, but can never remember the name. I'm terrible at pots, but this is one I can keep alive!

  9. I like how the huernia in that planter looks like a deer with wild antlers (to me at least)- I have that exact copper wall planter- I'm going to go for a similar look!
I'm really enjoying reading your posts - thanks, Cyndi

  10. Wanted to add...they do have head planters at Barton Springs Nursery in Austin, but they're male - or they looked male when empty/bald. I could see one of these heads with the cactus hair near the cowboy wall art on your patio, with a bandana around the planter's neck - a bandito rather than Medusa. Cyndi

  11. cyndik- thanks for the suggestion. I think I saw them but they were not quite what I was looking for. They were also a bit expensive. Cute idea though, to tie a bandana round the head. I should look on the internet to see what I can find.
