For several weeks D has been working on topping the 5 Spanish Oaks which were lost in last year's drought. Today was the big day to take the trunks down. Despite my protestations that we should get someone in to do the job D was determined to do the job himself. He headed to HD to rent a big chainsaw.
By a process of tying the trunks he was able to bring them down with minimal damage to the surrounding plants.
I stood by with water, camera and phone in hand (in case of an accident).
So sad to lose such big trees and the wonderful shade in the Spanish Oak garden. I heard another chainsaw being used in one of the houses behind us. So many trees lost to last year's brutal summer.
I'm glad that HD provided such great safety gear as well as requiring insurance.
It was a tough mornings work in wicked heat. Well done D.
Good work D. That is sad to see them go, they are such beautiful trees. Looks like quite an operation and well planned.
ReplyDeleteGood to hear that all is well and the phone wasn't needed.
Yes. Today's job is to lug them to the firewood area! They are heavy. Me/ I did my bit and I am off to play bridge in the cool AC.
DeleteIt was all that testosterone that kept him going. lol.
ReplyDeleteI call it being a workaholic! He always was and always will be, but nearing 70 surely will slow down soon!
DeletePretty hard work out in that heat. Shame to see such beauties go like that. I cut down trees around our pond yesterday, we get overgrown if we don't cut back every year.
ReplyDeleteIt was brutal even watching the proceeding. The worst thing is we now have no shade in that garden and it was our only shady place.
DeleteHe did an impressive job. It was hot today...a few of the newly transplanted plants didn't look too happy. There are dead Spanish oaks all through the hillsides out here...such a shame to have lost so many trees.
ReplyDeleteI just hope new trees will pop up but the deer seem to eat most seedlings.
DeleteI'm glad D found something relaxing to occupy his time since swearing off rock hauling! He looks like he knows what he's doing.
ReplyDeleteHe's learnt Caroline. He doesn't want to pay to have these jobs done so he has had to learn to do them. And has done them well.
DeleteAlways difficult to lose a tree. Doing the job yourselves saved a ton of money, but I'm like you--I would have been worried with cellphone in hand.
ReplyDeleteYes. Leaves more money for planting a replacement.
DeleteWe need to do some major tree pruning but the early spring meant everything was up and in the way before we knew it. I'm impressed you managed to take down big trees like that without harming the garden. And I immediately noticed all the safety gear. A guy who will take care of his own safety first is my kind of guy. And I, too, would have been standing by with my phone!
ReplyDeleteHD provides all the safety gear. They don't want any accidents wither. I was so glad they did.
DeleteGood job. And, a tough one.
ReplyDeleteGlad all went well. But, sorry to lose the trees. So many didn't make it.
What a brutal drought, killing trees of that size. I know you will miss their shade.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry for the tree's you lost ! But well done ! for your husband !!
ReplyDeleteWhat a bear of a job for you both on this hot day. I'm so sorry you lost those trees -- now you will start a new chapter in that garden -- whether you wanted to or not, I guess. Good luck with that.
