WHITE IS A COLOR TOO

I didn't realize how many white flowers I had int he garden until I went out to photograph them today.

The mock orange, Philadelphus sp Natchez is putting on the biggest white show.

Followed by the Anacacho orchid tree, Bauhinia lunariodes.

There's even a single rain lily, Cooperia drummondii, coaxed into blooming by the recent rains.

In the English garden the white knockout rose puts on her first full flush of blooms.

The native blackfoot daisy, Melampodium leucanthum.

Love-in-a-mist, Nigella sativa, with the spiky foliage. A faithful spring returner.

Larkspur,

A single white Shirley poppy.

The multiplying onions, Allium sepa, making a great stand. I think I may mix them in with my other garden flowers next year.

The potatoes are flowering.

And the snow pea flowers mean lots of peas over the next few weeks. I always plant Pisum sativum 'Cascadia' because they are open pollinated and I can save the seeds for next year.

The first pods.

And the tiny star flowered sedum, Sedum potosinum.

  1. I imagine the white gives off a "cool" feeling during the hot weather. Very beautiful. And I'm envious of your potatoes--mine haven't even been planted yet and you're close to pilfering some for supper. Lucky!!

  2. Oh, you have some beautiful whites and some great reseeders.

Is your Philadelphus fragrant? Mine is P. inodorous. Fragrant is better.

White Dawn rose is blooming here now. I guess I didn't know there was a white KO.

Color just will sneak into my white garden. I grew a white Gerbera daisy from seed from a pink. Subsequent seedlings from the white reverted to pink and even orange. What I thought was a white Lily turned out peach color. Maybe I'm meant to have a peach and white garden, lol.

  4. I guess I got your travel schedule wrong.
But, glad you're still here, and showing us your beautiful white flowers. White is one of m favorite flower colors. It seems to set off all the other colors.
And, as usual, I learned something here. I thought Snow Peas were just cool weather veggies. Maybe not?

    1. You have it correct Linda. Just did a couple before I left so I could remember my garden back home.

  5. All are beautiful! I was surprised to see a white-flowered Bauhinia. Taking stock of my own garden, I'm a bit surprised at how many white flowers I've acquired in my 3 years working in this garden too - I've introduced many to serve as mediators between other colors.

  6. Just lovely. Several things that were lost to freezes here in "south Dallas" seem to be thriving in your garden. Enjoyed seeing them!

  7. I love white in the garden. I've worked to add more in the last couple of years. Great post!

  8. That sedum sure is pretty.

It occurred to me, too, that allium sepa would look good in a mixed bed--in my case with larkspur and poppies. Do you know if they'll grow from seed . . . or is it better to move the bulbs? I'm also going to add cilantro to my annual seeding mix next fall, since that blooms so nicely this time of year.

  9. So pretty. As usual, everything in your garden beds looks like it is thriving and happy. I'm reminded to get my peas going as well before the heat takes completely over. I got distracted and let my primrose patch take over more territory and go longer than I usually do but we've enjoyed them (and their visitors) thoroughly. Every year something a little different!

In our spaces where we deal with a lot of semi-shade to shade, I think white blooms function a bit like mirrors, bringing light into all the corners. Yours are stunning.

  12. I was thrilled to see the return of my white love in a mist. I tried so hard to get them started, but eventually gave up. What did I see just yesterday! Love in a mist in several places. I'm not sure how that happened, but I'll take it!

  13. I love seeing all the flowers in your garden. White is nice to use as a buffer between different colors.

  14. I love your mock orange. How do you get it to flower so much? Mine has a very short and frangrant flowering period and then goes on to produce lots of leaves. What am I doing wrong?

    1. This one is not a native nor is it fragrant As a hybrid it has probably been bred for its flowers. Maybe yours is the native one which I know is fragrant.
