TOMATO TIME

The tomato season is nearly over at my house. It has been a mixed year. The stink bugs, leaf-footed bugs and tomato horn worms have taken care of a good number of the crop, as usual. However, this year I grew a new to my garden tomato, Black Krim, and I have to say I have not been disappointed.

For once the fruit looks almost as good as the one on the seed package and definitely worth growing for flavor and size. The only disappointment has been the number of fruit but with the growers now coming out with grafted tomatoes next year's crop may be more vigorous. I'm certainly going to have a go at grafting myself. When you start from seed there are always more plants than you need and why not experiment. For now we are just going to enjoy these in an insalata caprese salad......again!

  1. I've got to get over this feeling I have about the LOOKS of a tomato. I miss out on growing some tasty delights, I'm sure.
I've heard nothing but good things about this variety, yet I stubbornly refuse to grow it because it looks......bruised??

    1. You are right, his tomato wouldn't win any prizes for perfection but it is so delicious. It will be on my tomato list next year.

  2. We have Black Krim tomatoes every year and they are really great. The small amount of them is probably cause of the weather. I can see your tomatoes have cracks...Black Krim is Russian variety and don't like too hot weather. When it's too hot they stop producing flowers. Try planting them somewhere in shade, or in a big pot and move it from the sun you'll get lots of big fruits then :D

    1. The cracks could be because of some uneven watering. We did have a couple of heavy downpours and before that they didn't get much in the way of watering. Almost all my tomatoes stop producing when the night temperature gets above 70 and it has been that way for weeks. The good think is that we have a fall tomato season with starts in July.

    1. Years ago I used to can but now I am lazy so I usually roast and freeze my romas but I don't have enough to do that this year. Just one plant and it didn't do well.

  4. Black Krim has a wonderful, sort of smokey flavor. It does produce few fruits though, but they sure are delicious!

  5. I find myself laughing that your tomato season is nearly over, when ours here in the PNW has barely begun. I love these darker, more flavorful tomatoes, but they are so hard to grow here. We don't get enough heat.

    1. They are more flavorful but not so many as the other varieties. I wouldn't mind getting a little less heat!

  6. My season is just beginning, too.Black Krim is among the assortment that I planted. When the patch was full, I starting planting in flower beds. I think it will be an attractive addition along with the orange Kellogg's Breakfast and Flamme. It probably isn't going to like hot and humid but we'll manage. I can give it shade.

    1. I have planted among my flower too. I had too many seedlings! Must look into your other choices.

  7. Black Krim is my favorite tomato for flavor. If you've never done a homemade pizza with Black Krim, you're in for a surprising treat!

  8. My thoughts are the same as Alison's...our tomatoes season is just getting started! I'm trying to not be too sad I've only got room for 4 plants this year (no Black Krim for me) I'm trying to be a good gardener and rotate my crops...

  9. Those look gorgeous to me - and I love the way they taste in a BLT. We don't have a good space for tomatoes at the moment. Every spot with enough sun gets way too much sun, and we didn't get our starts out early enough so with the evening heat we aren't getting fruit set... Sigh. I'm glad there are plenty of tomatoes at the farmer's markets at least. Until we either trim back overhanging trees or switch what we are growing where, I'll have to stick to herb growing for the time being.

  10. I have been thinking about adding a few new varieties to my garden. Perhaps next year I will try some new ones. Love the color on some of these...look so delicious.

  11. Have you grown Cherokee Purple? That's one of my favorites for taste, and is a dusky tomato like the Krim. I love it! I didn't grow tomatoes this year, other than one pot on my patio, I'm looking forward to trying it, and got it for the name alone: Mexican Midget. Come on, how can you resist that?
