ECHOING COLOR

I decided some time ago that I needed to paint the bamboo in the jar the same color as the Whale's tongue agave, Agave ovatifolia. It's only craft paint but has stood up well to the elements. Alas, not so the agave which succumbed to poor drainage. This is the new one I planted last week which has wavier leaves. Paired here with red yucca, Hesperaloe parviflora and Ruby crystal grass, Melinis nerviglumis, the painted bamboo ties this little group together.

  1. I really like it! Probably the only other color choice for the bamboo would have been black, and that might have been too much.

  2. It's a pretty combination, Jenny! The berm under the new agave looks as though it should do the trick to provide proper drainage. As the reputed "Godzilla El Nino" draws nearer to SoCal, I admit to being worried about the future of my agaves and other drought-tolerant plants.

  3. Excellent! Well done and I might just steal it.

  4. So beautiful. Wondered before reading if the color was real or painted. Sometimes it is the little things that pull it together.

  5. It might "only" be craft paint but you sure nailed the color. It is perfect! I like how the broad shoulders of the vase echoes the broad leaves of your agave, with the rest of the elements all narrow and pointing skyward. This combination works on every level. Lively and peaceful all at the same time. Well played and well planted!

  6. It works beautifully and I like your new wavy agave. So far we've lost one agave to drainage and it left a pup behind, the Medio-picta Alba. We'll move it to a mound before the rains return. I'd been thinking of adding more bamboo accents to the garden and this is good inspiration.

Speaking of inspiration from Rock Rose, this week we're replacing most of the dead brown Mexican Feathergrass with Ruby Crystals after seeing look so good in your posts.

  7. I like the way you echoed the color of the agave in the painted bamboo, I also like the contrast of the Terracotta color with the blue grays. Rust and blues in various shades are a very appealing combination. A lovely photo!

  8. Having Danger Garden say she might steal your idea is probably praise enough, but I'll add my "bravo!"

  9. That's a great idea, Jenny! I love the color echo, and the whole combo in fact.
